The Lemp family of St. Louis was one of the first and most successful brewing families in St. Louis, with brands once known around the world. Their tragic family history has largely overshadowed their legendary successes.
As the former home of one of St. Louis' most mysterious and notable families, the Lemp Mansion of St. Louis has an illustrious and fascinating tale to tell. It's a story of fine living, tragic death, and perhaps, a few ghosts from its unsettling past.
Hosted by author Stephen Walker, the Lemp Reality tour takes guests to 13 places with a connection to Lemp family history, and includes a rare visit inside the Lemp Mausoleum in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
The illustrious history of the Lemp family in St. Louis spans some 150 years, and even though the immediate family is no longer with us, their impact continues to be felt. Perhaps no other family in the city's history has known such a combination of mercantile success and family tragedy.
At one time the William J. Lemp Brewing Company was the largest brewery in St. Louis, and the eighth-largest in the nation. Then Prohibition and family tragedies set the brewery into downward spiral from which it would never recover.
Here's the book that will tell you the whole story of the Lemp family, their once-mighty brewing dynasty, and the incredible mansion they left behind. Theirs is an amazing history that is often overshadowed by mythology and urban legend.
